"Every time we teach a child something, we keep him from inventing it himself. On the other hand, that which we allow him to discover by himself will remain with him visibly...for the rest of his life."
Jean Piaget (Play and Development)
Answer.com defines naive as "Lacking worldly experience and understanding, especially: 1) simple and guileless; artless; 2) Unsuspecting or credulous; howing or characterized by a lack of sophistication and critical judgment."
We don't.
We define naive as "willfully disinclined to accept as inevitable the various destructive features of our education system and our society."
NAIVE stands for the National Association Interested in Vivisecting Evil. It began as a running joke on EngTeach-Talk, a discussion list for English teachers, but it's one of those jokes with a serious side. I keep thinking a wider audience and more participation in the "organization" would be a good thing.
By "evil" we mean standardized testing, grading, and other bureaucratic infestations that degrade students, teachers, and the generally harm the spirit of learning in education.
We started using the term before George W. Bush gave it a bad name ;-)
