"Neither learning nor justice is promoted by schooling because educators insist on packaging instruction with certification."

Dear Friends, Please do not expect me to speak Spanish like a veteran when I return; I'm not even on the level of a toddler yet! I have about two sentences and several phrases at my command (so to speak!). The school is in the central part of this 400 year-old city and is very old. It resembles a ancient office building. There is only one other student in my beginning class, a retired police chief from a small town in northern California. He claims he is looking all over Mexico for a place to retire. During class he thinks and acts like he knows everything, but our teacher told ME that I have excellent pronunciation! So far, after one day, I feel totally ignorant and tongue-tied, and hope this does not last too long. When in my safe environment in Minnesota this sounded like a great adventure, but the reality is quite different. It is a very isolating experience. I am determined to get as much out of it as possible, a source of pride (and economics!). Other North American students here so far are busy doing their own thing, and that is learning the language. Within a few days I hope to have made some friends. So far my impressions of the city are limited, but on week-ends I hope to take buses to outlying areas. !Currently my big project is to learn Spanish since I have discovered to my dismay that it is muy dificil and the teaching is rapido!

WoW!
This is truly an adventure... new place, new friends, new language! "Wow!" merely brushes the surface :)
Being submerged in a culture is supposed to be the best way to learn... Bravo!

Good Job!
Hi Kate, Glad to hear you are all settled and the star of your beginning class. That's no surprise! There are pros and cons for such a small number of students. We leave tomorrow for Colorado. We have had a good visit here in So Cal with friends and relatives...(We were able to visit Len's 95 year old mom on the day she couldn't breathe well and paramedics were called and took her to the hospital. Len was with her the whole time and she checked out OK, but we can see her failing.) We also ate at some of our favorite restaurants ...shades of PV. Wish the weather had been sunnier so we could top off our tan and look like we had been somewhere when we return to snow coungtry. Now it is back to reality; Kirsten has already given me a shopping list for Anika's birthday party on Saturday and I am to prepare the main dish and two salads. That's what I'm there for. Len had a root canal and I saw all of my doctors and so far health is great. (What did you find out about the red on your legs?) Keep up the excellent pronunciation and hope you meet some sympathic explorers so you can investigate all of Guadalajara.
