My kids spent Tuesday morning with me, watching me pace, asking lots of questions.... my youngest (5) saying lots of things like, "Mama, what if, what if there was this big bomb, and it was in the ground, and the dirt went *THIS* high!" and we'd say yes, how awful and scary that would be, and how we're glad that isn't happening. That afternoon they were quite hyperactive, and while my first impulse was to be annoyed, I realized it was likely their way of dealing with an emotional morning and tense mommy. My oldest (9 in two weeks) gets the mail every day (in hopes of getting a letter from a pal, so far in vain :-( and he nabbed the special Time edition and read it before I even knew it came... unfortunately, it showed the people leaping from the WTC buildings, so that prompted a discussion. He asks questions as they come to him, and as he hears conversations take place. My youngest so far seems fairly oblivious to it. One tense moment came when my son tried to watch a favorite tv show, but it wasn't on due to the constant coverage. He made a snarly comment about how he can't see it because of the "bad stuff" going on (in a sarcastic voice). I fought the urge to be appalled, and talked about why, again, this is such an important time. We're doing lots of talking, lots of just "being" during the evenings, with candles lit and story times and snuggles.
