My first thought this morning, watching the horror unfold on TV while my older girls were in their room chatting merrily and drawing pictures in their notebooks, was Do they have to know? But I went upstairs and told them that tragic and historic events were happening and that they could, if they wanted, join me in watching. I hate to see our happy, secure children exposed to such horror and fear, hate it hate it hate it, but any attempt to shield them would be futile and unfair. This is their world, too. They need to know it. So we watched together and talked about what was happening. Later, the girls built a fort in the living room, a small haven of pillows and couch cushions and blankets. They have flashlights and a radio and a fine complement of stuffed animals and books. A safe place. They came out for lunch. --Eric Crump
