The Head of our school passed out some suggestions she got from the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) that recommended that yes, school routine goes on as normal - an interruption in life is an interruption in personal security. Remember that children do not always experience everything that adults do. In fact adults are often more affected by the experience than children because we can comprehend and appreciate the nature and severity of such disasters. When children ask questions it's usually because they already have an idea and the question is generated from a feeling. Your best bet is to explore why they asked the questions - what they were thinking of that made them want to ask that and what they feel the answer is. That is your best bet to being able to address their real concerns. I started crying again when I read Ginger's last line in her e-mail. I found it difficult to drive home last night as well.
