I have a female student in my World Literatue class who is a Muslim from
the Middle East (I don't know which country).  She called yesterday to let
me know that she would not be attending class until people calmed down.
She told me that her father was receiving phone calls with death threats.
She said the same thing happened to them when the Oklahoma Federal
Building was bombed.  I told her that her absence would not be held
against her, and I wished her and her family well.  Although our
university is not cancelling classes and encouraging instructors to talk
to students about what has happened, I cannot expect this student to
attend class when she feels threatened.
