I see instead another way to use the heart. If students are in my classes, what do I really have to offer that makes the situation any better? It seems to me that the best thing I can offer, if I offer anything, is doing my small, daily part to help a few more people understand a thing or two more about subjects which I have spent many years preparing to teach. It may also be that I can set an example of persevering under stress. It worked for the British during the fire-bombing of World War II, and it works for the Israelis right now. I hope not, but we may have to get used to that ourselves. At any event, my students did good work today, and I was able to praise them for it, to give them optimism that perhaps they can be more successful at writing than they thought. Hearts warm in several ways. And sometimes, sometimes perhaps they also need some cooling.
