My room has cable, so in my classes today, we watched the news for the
first few minutes of class. Then, I turned off the TV and asked the kids
if they had any other questions. I made sure they knew what had happened
and also reassured them that probably we were safe here in our city.

They are afraid that there are terrorists in our school, that there is a
plane headed for their families' buildings, etc. I have said that these
things happening are very unlikely, but all evening activities in our
district have been cancelled, just in case.

I told my students that it seems strange that I'm giving a quiz and asking
them to turn in their books to page 38 when such horrible things have
happened, but that we need to get some things done today.

So, despite my attempts to be "productive," we are on autopilot as of now.
The only thing I can do is tell the kids that we'll check the news the
last five minutes of class, and that I'll be keeping the victims in my
thoughts and prayers.

What a horrible tragedy. What a waste, a complete disregard for human
life.
