My students' homework over the weekend was to work on 5 ideas to help out.  
One student immediately said he wanted to send a card and letter.  
Another just brought in red, white, and blue ribbons on safety pins that
he and his mom had made--we're going to make them up and sell them, then
send the money to the victims' families (a local bank is handling that).  
Students want to feel a bit a of power in this powerless situation.  They
CAN make a difference!
